An iron stylus mounted on a piece of wood was the implement used to write on a palm-leaf. The stylus was grasped in the hand as shown above. When one wanted to read it a crushed leaf was smeared on the written material to make the indentations stand out. The writing instrument was called 'Eluththaani' in Tamil meaning 'nail used to write letters'.
